Sacred Space
On Sunday, September 28th, we’ll have a special event at Field Temple from 4 to 7 pm. We will celebrate the intention, work and love put into finishing the Nkenge Zola Forest Gazing Path from 4 to 5 pm. The path now leads from Elmwood Street back to the meditation area. Then it winds through forest, field and grasses in a loop back to the original stretch of path.
Sculptor Baba Yao Shamlord Kaza, whose show Quiet Mastery just finished its run at the Carr Center, has created a large stone sculpture that sits at the intersection of the paths. It is an image of Nkenge Zola. To some it also seems to embody Kwanseum Bosal or Kwan Yin, the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion, and people come to sit in her presence. One young child in the neighborhood kisses the statue each time he walks by. The statue certainly has its own power and emanation. Come experience for yourself , meet and greet the sculptor, walk the path and rest in the space.
All are invited to bring a perennial or a bulb to plant along the path.
Sacred Sound
At 5 pm, the Sacred Sound begins with some storytelling and poetry.
Then Billy Mark will play a set of inspired music.
If you don’t know him as an artist and person holding inspiration and faith, this is a great chance to become acquainted. If you do know him, then you know that every show will be different because of the specifics of day, time, place, self, spirit and the combination they arrive in, and will be interpreted musically and poetically as the day recommends. The ones listening are also a part of the inspiration, so come, be present. .https://cac.org/podcasts/experimental-liturgies-with-billy-mark/
The show is headlined by Kathy Lea, and is the first show of her national tour. “Exploring intimate contexts and collaborations for gathering in a nutritious authentic way,” she writes of “carrying my music, prayer and creative practices to you and yours - homes, backyards, farms, gardens, temples, stores, lightning bugs.” She plays in sacred spaces with the knowledge that music is powerful and a force for change in the world.
